Nothing spreads faster than knowledge

Wilcox Health is an integral part of Kauai's community and bears a great responsibility in keeping Kauai healthy. With that responsibility comes a commitment to be an active member in the community and provide education and services geared toward prevention and wellness.

Staying involved with the community in ways that promote healthy lifestyles is part of the Wilcox Health mission of assuring a healing environment in a healthy community.

Over the years, Wilcox Health has sponsored and participated in many local activities, including blood banks, health fairs, charity events and most recently a Water Safety Task Force that reaches out to both residents and visitors. Wilcox Health is also a trusted source of information when it comes to local health issues and health and lifestyle classes.

Health Fairs and Special Events

Throughout the year, health representatives from Wilcox Memorial Hospital attend various community health fairs that cover everything from educating women about the importance of early breast cancer detection to diabetes education and awareness. Meanwhile, Wilcox Health community workshops continue to attract standing-room-only audiences. Wilcox Health physicians, staff and volunteers often help a joint healthcare focused event, such as the American Heart Association's annual American Heart Walk. Dr. John Funai, chief of the Cardiology Department at Kauai Medical Clinic, serves on the Kauai Community Board of the American Heart Association, as well as KMC cardiologist Dr. Eugene Shafton. Together they participate in the annual walk along with staff from Wilcox Health, and the hospital's lab also contributes free lipid profiles, body fat analysis, and professional consultation to the annual event.

Interested in participating as a guest or a volunteer? Find out about upcoming health fairs and special events on our Kauai Community Health Calendar.

Kauai Water Safety Task Force

The Kauai Water Safety Task Force is a citizen group that includes Wilcox Memorial Hospital emergency room physicians and nurses that meet monthly to develop strategies for Kauai's current water safety issues. As Kauai County has Hawaii's highest per capita drowning ratio, the task force lobbies county and state officials and encourages private industry to help educate residents and visitors about water safety.

Community Volunteering

In addition to community involvement, several physicians volunteer their time at local high school football games and at the Kona Ironman Triathlon. Beyond Hawaii, overseas medical missions are an integral part of the personal and professional lives of several medical staff physicians.

We also appreciate our community volunteers who give generously of their time with patients and contribute through the Wilcox Health Foundation and the Auxiliary.
