Children always come first at Wilcox Health.
There is nothing more important than ensuring our children receive the best medical care available and that parents have complete confidence in their children's medical providers. Wilcox Memorial Hospital, Kauai Medical Clinic and our affiliated physicians and medical staff provide Kauai's keiki with loving, skilled care around the clock.
At Kauai Medical Clinic we enjoy helping children grow and develop into the best they can be. Caring for children from birth to young adulthood, we emphasize preventative healthcare as well as sick visits.
School Physicals
Since many adult maladies, such as scoliosisk, can be prevented or caught in childhood, regular checkups and early screenings are critical. Our pediatricians provide school health exams as well as sports physicals to school-age children. We encourage parents to schedule these appointments during the summer months.
Vaccinations
Vaccinations are among the most important tools available for preventing disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Vaccinations not only protect children from developing a potentially serious disease, but also protect the community by reducing the spread of infectious disease.
Most children get all their shots during childhood. A community awareness campaign called Every Child by Two [available at www.ecbt.org] urges parents to make sure their children are protected against some childhood diseases before the child is two years old.
Parents should consult their pediatrician about which shots children should have and when. We encourage you to keep track of your children's immunizations yourself. You will be asked for these records when each child enrolls in school and throughout the child's school years.
Each year, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), issue a recommended childhood immunization schedule. This schedule is updated and published by the CDC. For the most current schedule, visit the childhood immunization schedule. It is published in January of each year. Changes may be made during the year if necessary.
Choosing a Pediatrician
If you have not selected your child's pediatrician, we invite you to schedule appointments to meet our staff. Your choice of physician is important and, in most cases, is the person your child will regularly see. The right professional for your child is the one you communicate with best. Your child may occasionally be asked to see a different professional in our group if your child's primary care physician is out of the office. Many of our staff have expertise in specific areas of health, such as allergies and asthma. When you call for an appointment, please let us know if your child has any particular health needs.
Specialized Services
When accidents happen, Wilcox Health is there to heal Kauai's little ones with new specialties such as children's orthopedics. These special medical services for children, along with a distinguished pediatric team that provides ongoing preventive care, give Kauai's children a running start to become strong, healthy adults.
