Anesthesiology
Our anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists provide anesthesia and pain management for hospital patients and outpatient surgeries and procedures at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Developments in anesthetic techniques provide the anesthesia care team with many options to treat patients while ensuring their maximum safety and comfort.
Cardiology
Cardiologists John Funai, M.D., and Eugene Shafton, M.D., F.A.C.C. care for adults with heart-related diseases and conditions, through diagnosis, treatment and management of hypertension (high blood pressure) and diseases of the heart's valves, muscles and arteries. The Cardiology Department offers a full range of adult cardiovascular services, including noninvasive stress testing, echocardiography, pacemaker care, and diagnostic cardiac catheterization.
There's no need to make a physician referral for an appointment. However, it is recommended you also have a primary care physician for noncardiac illnesses. Dermatology
Dermatologist Trevor Thompson, M.D. specializes in treating conditions related to the skin, hair and nails including:
- Acne
- Skin cancer evaluation and treatment

Emergency Services
The Wilcox Memorial Hospital emergency room is staffed by Kauai Medical Clinic physicians and specially trained personnel 24 hours a day to treat immediate medical emergencies.
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Emergency Center opened in 1995 with a spacious triage area, a waiting area that accommodates 30 people, 20 beds and a host of new equipment, including a new central monitoring system. A high-tech communication system allows medical staff to communicate with emergency medical teams en route to the hospital. This system also provides a communication link with triage centers on Oahu. Patients with major trauma and head injuries are transferred to Oahu tertiary care centers via air ambulance.

Family Practice Medicine
Our family practice division provides comprehensive healthcare for the "whole family." It covers all ages, sexes, body organs and human diseases.
Our Kauai Medical Clinic family practice physicians specialize in providing medical care for the entire family. They emphasize a comprehensive approach to the patient and coordinate the efforts of other specialists when needed. They are trained to manage the healthcare needs of newborns, children, adolescents, adults and seniors.
Family physicians possess unique skills and knowledge, which qualifies them to provide comprehensive medical care, health maintenance and preventive services to each family member regardless of sex, age or problem. These specialists, because of their background and interaction with the family, are best qualified to serve as each patient's advocate in all health-related matters, including the appropriate use of consultants, health services and community resources.

Gastroenterology
Our physicians treat patients with problems such as abdominal pain, ulcers, gallstones, Hepatitis B and C, bowel obstructions, liver ailments, intestinal inflammations, colon cancer screening and benign or malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.
Our physicians can perform a wide variety of tests to diagnose a problem, including endoscopic examination of the area and biopsies or radiological examination. We have the latest video endoscopy equipment and perform hundreds of colon cancer screening procedures annually.
The Gastroenterology Department is on the second floor of the Kauai Medical Clinic.

Internal Medicine
Kauai Medical Clinic's Internal Medicine Department provides primary care management to adult and geriatric patients. Our physicians specialize in medical management of patients with complex, interacting medical conditions. Services include immunization, preventive care, and patient education.
The Internal Medicine department is on the second floor of the Main Clinic in Lihue. Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Neurology
Dr. Surendra Rao is Kauai Medical Clinic's board-certified neurologist and sees patients at our Neurology Center. Dr. Rao specializes in the treatment of brain injury, epilepsy, stroke, headache management, carpal tunnel syndrome, muscle weakness and other conditions.

Obstetrics & Gynecology
With the majority of Kauai's newborns taking their first breaths at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, Obstetrics & Gynecology requires a strong team.
Our Obstetrics Department is comprised of board-certified physicians.
Services include general obstetrics and gynecology, infertility, laparascopic and laser surgery.

Oncology/Hematology
Visiting board-certified oncologists from Straub Hospital and Clinic are able to evaluate and treat all types of cancer and blood disorders. Three physicians travel from Honolulu to provide care and treatment to Kauai patients as we continue to recruit for a resident full-time, permanent oncologist. Through our affiliation with Hawaii Pacific Health, we are able to provide specialty care from a neighbor island physician to our patients so they may be treated here on Kauai. In this department patients can receive blood transfusions, chemotherapy, nutritional support, antibiotics and other IV therapy. In addition to the physician-provided services, Kauai Medical Clinic's nurses are skilled in providing education and emotional support to patients and their families.

Ophthalmology and Optometry
Dr. Timothy Lee is a board-certified ophthalmologist and practices out of the Eye Care Center at Kauai Medical Clinic's Kukui Grove office. Optometrist, Dr. Layne Hashimoto, joined Dr. Lee in 2004 and practices in the same building. Full-service eye care is available including, but not limited to:
- Comprehensive medical eye examinations
- In-office ambulatory surgery center
- Small-incision cataract and lens-implant surgery
- Laser therapy: glaucoma, secondary cataracts, diabetes and retina

Orthopedics (Muscle and Bone)
The Orthopedic Team at the Bone and Joint Center at Kauai Medical Clinic has expanded to include the specialties of othropedic surgery, podiatry and physiatry. They work closely with the nursing staff, physical therapist and occupational therapist, for both inpatient and outpatient care. Their goal is to help the patient heal rapidly and achieve a high level of function. They are dedicated to the prevention and care of competitive and recreational athletic injuries, as well as standard office and surgical management of musculoskeletal injuries.
Our staff has special expertise in sports medicine and the care and treatment of athletic injuries. From the management of complex joint, muscle and ligament disorders to sprains and strains, our sports medicine team understands the importance of training, conditioning, surgical and nonsurgical treatments.
Located on the ground floor of the main Kauai Medical Clinic, the Orthopedic Department, known as the Bone and Joint Center at Kauai Medical Clinic is open Monday through Friday, as well as limited hours on Saturday.

Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat)
A specialist in Otalaryngology, otherwise known as "Ear, Nose & Throat", is available at the main clinic in Lihue. H. Roger Netzer, M.D., treats such conditions related to this specialty, including but not restricted to:
- Hearing problems and ear aches
- Throat and tonsil problems
- Nose and sinus conditions
- Tumors
- Snoring problems
- Facial pain or swelling in the head and neck area
Dr. Netzer also treats patients for lesions and pigmentation. Micro-dermabrasion is now also being offered under Dr. Netzer's care to freshen and rejuvenate the skin and to improve irregularities and sun damage.

Pediatrics

If you have not selected a pediatrician, we invite you to schedule consultations to meet our staff. Choosing your doctor is important. He or she in most cases is the person you will regularly see. The right professional for you is the one with whom you communicate best. You may occasionally be asked to see a different professional in our group if your doctor is out of the office. Many of our staff have special interests in specific areas of health, such as allergies and asthma. When you call for an appointment, please let us know about any concerns for your child's health.

Podiatric Medicine and Surgery
Dr. Tyler A. Chihara, DPM, is board-certified by the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric medicine. He provides care for many common foot conditions, including:

Radiology and Diagnostic Services
The Imaging Department, recently named the Wilcox Family Imaging Center, is a full-service department providing routine and specialized imaging and/or therapeutic procedures for inpatient, outpatient and emergency patients. The department is staffed seven days a week and has staff available 24 hours a day. Board-certified physician radiologists provide quality care and timely interpretation of radiographic procedures.

Surgery
The new Wilcox Surgical Center and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Special Procedures Unit offers a full complement of surgical services. Completed in 2006, the new surgical center is equipped with video routing systems and voice activated operating rooms, making this center one of the most modern operating rooms in the state of Hawaii. Our high technology equipment allows general surgeons to do major surgery using minimally invasive techniques. The new computer navigation system allows orthopedic surgeons to do total knee replacements with precision accuracy. With the expansion of our Same Day Surgery suites and our new waiting room, we are able to provide a more efficient, pleasant and private environment to care for you and your loved ones. Kauai Medical Clinic's Urology Department treats diseases of the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, bladder, ureter, urethra) and the male reproductive organs. The clinic's urologist is William Bodenstab, M.D.. His office is on the third floor of the main clinic.
