SUBJECT: Dr. Yoon Joins KMC Internal Medicine Department

When you meet Dr. James Yoon, he will put you at ease and ask you to call him “Jimmy.” Dr. Jimmy Yoon moved to Kauai in the last month to join the Kauai Medical Clinic Internal Medicine staff.  He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. “We are delighted to have Dr. Yoon on our staff,” said Ken Pierce, Chief Medical Officeproblems. His Infectious Diseases specialty is an asset to our clinic, and he will be able to help patients with less common, more r of Kauai Medical Clinic. “With Dr. Yoon on board, we are able to better serve our patients who have serious medical complicated infectious diseases who are referred by their primary care physicians.”

Dr. Yoon went to Pomona College in California, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, and graduated from medical school at NOVA-Southeastern University of Health Services in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, which means he has received the traditional four year comprehensive medical education with an additional emphasis on disease prevention and treatment of the total person, rather than their disease alone. Because of their total-person philosophy, many osteopathic physicians, like Dr. Yoon, specialize in primary care fields such as Internal Medicine.

Dr. Yoon completed his Internal Medicine Tracking, rotating internship at Atlantic City Medical Center in New Jersey, his Internal Medicine Residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, and his Infectious Disease Fellowship at New York Hospital-Queens, Weil-Cornell School of Medicine. Dr. Yoon has the distinction of being the first doctor of osteopathic medicine to be accepted into these residency and fellowship programs.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Dr. Yoon grew up in Los Angeles, California since he was 5 years old. He has traveled to big cities as well as small rural communities in his assignments from CompHealth, a health organization that provides temporary  (locum tenems) physician coverage for clinics and hospitals.  As a locum tenems physician, he worked in Montana, New York, Washington, Maui, New Mexico, South Carolina, and Kansas.

As busy as doctors are, many make time to help with medical missions and community programs. Dr. Yoon is no exception. He has volunteered his time and expertise to programs such as “Doctors Without Borders,” helping HIV patients, and while in New York, he volunteered at summer camps, working with mentally challenged and autistic adults.

“I like the island lifestyle, and chose to make Kauai my home because of the beauty of the island and the friendly people,” said Dr. Yoon. “I like being outdoors, and Kauai is so perfect for things I like to do, like playing golf, hiking, snorkeling and active sports.” Dr. Yoon has made his home in Kalaheo.

Dr. Yoon’s office is on the 2nd floor of Kauai Medical Clinic in Lihue. For appointments, call 245-1540.
