The Samuel R. Wallis Scholarship for medical students at the University of Hawaii
Dr. Samuel R. Wallis, a long-time physician for Lihue Plantation Co., joined Wilcox Memorial Hospital when it opened in 1938. He was chief of staff for many years and a founder and first president of the Kauai Medical Group. Shortly after Dr. Wallis' death in 1973, a living memorial was established in the form of the Samuel R. Wallis Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is meant to educate students pursuing careers in medicine. It is awarded preferentially to students attending the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine who have demonstrated an intent to return to the Kauai, who were born on the island, or have been-long time residents Kauai or state of Hawaii residents. The scholarship has helped a considerable number of medical students complete their education.
Mabel I. Wilcox Scholarship for Kauai Community College Nursing Students
The foundation's board established a nursing scholarship in honor of Mabel I. Wilcox to meet the staffing needs of Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in the Kauai Community College Career Ladder Nursing Program. A committee comprising representatives from the Wilcox Health Foundation and Kauai Community College reviews applications. Students are selected based on academic excellence, financial need and service to Wilcox Health. When selecting students, the committee tries to pull from the "Wilcox Family" — students who are either already working at Wilcox Health or who have volunteered or been involved with Wilcox in some way. We also hope that scholarship recipients will practice nursing on Kauai or in the state of Hawaii when they complete their education. The foundation funds five students per year at $1,500 each. Many of the recipients are adult students whose responsibilities and challenges are so great that they would be unable to continue their education without assistance.
